A London police sergeant has shocked members of the public by posting a picture on Twitter of a huge knife left behind by youths on an estate in south London.

The knife, which is approximately 15 inches in length, was left abandoned as officers attended reports of a group of people smoking cannabis in a stairwell of Perronet House, near Elephant & Castle in the borough of Southwark.

Metropolitan Police Sergeant David Hunt tweeted an image of his partner, Police Constable Osborne, holding up the knife, which drew worried responses from Twitter users.

‘Just seized this knife maybe saved another life? Unfortunately didn’t catch the youth carrying it,’ Sgt Hunt said.

‘The worrying thing is why did they have it in the first place?’
