Here is the news from: whitbygazette.co.uk/news
A WHITBY family has been left heartbroken this Christmas after thieves broke into their house while they slept and stole the presents from under their tree as well as taking their new car.
The burglars struck at the home of pensioners Terry Page (72) and his wife Ann (69) in Ruswarp Lane between 11pm on Christmas Eve and 6am on Christmas Day, taking items worth a total of £26,000.
The pair were sound asleep along with their sons Phil from Leeds and Keith, his wife Anja and their grand children Nicolai (7) and Tatyana (14), who had all flown over especially for the festive season from Germany.
Nobody heard a thing as the thieves ransacked the house.
It was only at 6 am as Keith walked downstairs into the conservatory that he made the shock discovery that almost all their presents along with two laptops, two plasma TVs, a £2,000 Canon camera set up to record the kids opening their presents, two mobile phones and even Nicolai’s Nintendo 3DS had been stolen.
The pensioner’s Vauxhall Corsa, registration number YX12TXV was also taken.
Mr Page said they could not believe what had happened – the thieves just left a handful of presents and sweets behind.
“Nicolai was very excited about Christmas. He still believes in Father Christmas and had left a carrot and a drink under the tree for Santa,” he said.
“I thought it was a joke at first when Phil came running upstairs shouting ‘we have been robbed’.
“I felt absolutely devastated, everybody was crying. My wife, who celebrates her 70th birthday this Sunday, was inconsolable for half an hour. They cherry picked the presents they wanted as they even took Nicolai’s radio control car and the children’s Nintendo Wii.”
Instead of unwrapping their gifts, the children had to stay upstairs while forensic officers searched the house for clues.
However, they were still able to enjoy their Christmas dinner as a family as they all pulled together.
Mr Page added: “The police were amazing, The response from them was first class.
“We’ve lived here 32 years and in that time I don’t think we’ve broken anything more than a cup in the house.
“We’ve been no trouble to anyone and we really wanted the children to have a nice Christmas.”
Neighbours have since rallied round and given the family a television while another has offered them a two seater car to use.
PC Glyn Wenham, of Whitby Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “This is a particularly shocking and despicable burglary.
“This type of crime is always distressing but even more so at this time of year. It would have been obvious that the callous burglars stole presents intended for small children.
“If you know who committed this heartless crime I urge you to contact the police or Crimestoppers immediately.
“I also need to speak to anyone who may have seen the Vauxhall Corsa since it was stolen and ask that they get in touch.”
Anyone who can help with this investigation is asked to contact Whitby police on 101, select option 2 and ask for Glyn Wenham. Alternatively information can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
